One of my favourite pastimes down here in Cornwall is to visit the castles. To borrow a cliche, it very much feels like a step back in time. The buildings themselves are fascinating but it’s the sense of history that makes them special.

I’ve not been to all of the castles. I have a couple left on my list. And there are some ancient forts I want to visit as well. But the ones below are the ones I have visited so far.

Pendennis Castle

This is my local castle down here in Falmouth. It sits on the Pendennis Point peninsula overlooking the Falmouth Harbour.

Little Dennis

This is a fort rather than a castle. Like Pendennis Castle it sits on the Pendennis Point peninsula. It has spectacular views of the harbour and sea.

St Mawes Castle

This overlooks Falmouth harbour and faces towards Pendennis Castle. It is sat right on the coastline, with its cannons pointing into the water in the bay.

Tintagel

This is situated on an island and legend has it, it is the place where King Arthur was conceived. A recently built, and stunning, bridge connects the island to the shore.

St Michael’s Mount

This is a spectacular castle to go visit. It is situated on an island near the village of Penzance. When the tide is out, you can walk across a causeway to get there. But make sure you don’t get caught by the tide coming in.
