Pendennis Castle is my local castle in Falmouth.  It is situated on the Pendennis peninsula, with stunning views of Falmouth Harbour and Town.

It was built, like St Mawes Castle, by Henry VIII in the 1540’s to protect England from invasion.  At that time the main fears were of potential French or Spanish invasions.  

Pendennis Castle faces across Falmouth harbour towards St Mawes Castle.  Both castles were built to fire across the area known as the Carrick Roads.

The castle itself has a wall surrounding it with a moat (no water) outside.  And there are modern buildings on the site although there is still the original Keep.

Walking around the Keep you can feel the history. The design is to provide the inhabitants with not just the ability to live there, but to defend themselves from any attackers.

You can also see guns that were added to the site to be used during World War 1 and World War 2.  So there is a mixture of ages of warfare history to be found here.

The views afforded across the bay are tremendous. The site does feel a little bit exposed at the top of the peninsula. But it means the castle can be viewed on the landscape from afar.

    Little Dennis Fort is placed on the edge of Pendennis Point peninsula, in a stunning location. It was built in Tudor times and then was dismantled as a fort in 1654.

    It is a beautiful location, whether it is a stormy winter’s day or a hot summer’s day.

    It is a stone’s throw from Pendennis Castle and can be accessed from a nearby carpark.
