Tintagel is situated on the cliffs of an island on the north coast of Cornwall.  Legend has it that King Arthur was conceived here.

From the 5th century to the 7th century the rulers of Cornwall were said to live here.

When you get to Tintagel the first thing that greets you is the stunning recently built bridge that connects the mainland to the island. You have incredible views walking across the bridge. In fact you have incredible views all around Tintagel.

On the island itself you can see the remains of the buildings that are left. I was rather hoping there would be a castle left in place. But you still get a sense of the history and purpose of the place from looking at the remains.

The artistic statue of King Arthur looks amazing and is suitably located in a stunning location overlooking the land and sea.

You can walk back to the mainland down some steps and across. This is at a lower level and provides a nice contrast to the bridge.

St Mawes Castle is sat right on the edge of the water, facing across Falmouth Harbour to Pendennis Castle.  Like Pendennis Castle, St Mawes Castle was built to protect the Carrick Roads from invasion (Spanish or French).  

It was built by Henry VIII in the 1540’s and is four storeys high.  It has its cannons pointing out across the harbour. And you can see the turrets on the castle. The castle building is very much intact and has a dominating position next to the water. Like Pendennis Castle, it is maintained by the English Heritage.

For the visitor it is a fascinating site to go to, with beautiful views across Falmouth Harbour. It feels very much like the twin to Pendennis Castle.
